Porcelain hand built box with metallic glaze.
The inspiration behind this piece comes from two tomb tiles dating back to the Eastern Han dynasty, and excavated in 1988, Jinqueshan. The maker pressed his left hand into the wet clay of only two hollow tiles before they were inserted into the wall.
Coming across this page in a book about the afterlife was a sentimental moment for me as a maker. It was amusing that he chose to use his left hand, as I am left-handed. It is so profoundly human to leave a mark of our existence. The legacy of an anonymous laborer survives in a simple handprint. We are both turtles, breaking the surface for a little blip in in time, retreating when the moment is over.
